Yahoo Groups and Listservs have become
popular targets for Spammers and Ad Companies around the world, warns Jennifer
Miller in an article published last week in MedLaw News. LNCs who join
these Yahoo groups should take a closer look at what they've gotten into.

WHAT
IS A LEGAL
NURSE CONSULTANT (LNC)?
A Legal
Nurse Consultant is a licensed, registered nurse with legal training
that consults with attorneys, doctors, and/or clients on medical
matters. They lend their knowledge and expertise to the legal
system through reviewing medical records, medical research, and by
written and oral court testimony. This could include reviewing relevant
medical literature or medical records, interviewing witnesses, and
providing a professional medical opinion.

WHY SHOULD AN LNC BELONG TO
MORE THAN ONE LNC
ORGANIZATION?
As an LNC, you are in business for yourself.
To succeed, it is important to market yourself as a Legal Nurse
Consultant. By joining more than one organization, the
connection between your name and the profession strengthens in several
powerful ways:
Your internet presence as an LNC increases
You may add to your credentials
Your network with other LNCs grows
Increased visibility to a greater number of
employers
Your knowledge of the LNC field expands
What are the
benefits and privileges of becoming a member of NALNC?
NALNC members enjoy a free listing in the
NALNC Directory. This is a
fantastic tool for marketing and networking opportunities. When a
potential client searches the internet in your area, make your name the
one they will find. The NALNC Forum is an excellent way to network with
your peers, share information, pool resources and discover
new employment opportunities. Also, take advantage of our
NALNC Jobs Board to learn of current
employment opportunities. Check out what's happening in the news related
to LNCs at NALNC News. All this and
more is available to members. Content is being added and improved
daily.
Attention legal professionals: Are you seeking
a Legal Nurse Consultant? This website contains two searchable
directories, the LNC Directory
of all American NALNC members and a national
Med/Law Expert
Witness Directory.
WANTED
NALNC Chapter Presidents
Start your own Local NALNC
Chapter
and begin charging members a fee!
NALNC is looking for public and privately posted
articles, newsletters, listserv messages, and especially
"private" or public Yahoo group messages (esp, but not
limited to, those authored by LNCs) that include any false
or negative information about a business, person or patient,
and any details or information regarding a patient or
patient's case that's been published to the internet. You
may remain anonymous, if you choose. Please include the
author's identity and the place the info was posted.
The
materials collected by NALNC will be used to survey the
professional (and non professional) conduct of LNCs to
determine whether regulations governing internet postings
(whether they fall in the category of "private" or
public--there being no significant difference) should be
implemented, or in states which already have such
regulations, whether such regulation should be enforced.
Important
Notice to NALNC Members:
Any NALNC Member who publishes
inappropriate content to the internet may have their
membership permanently suspended. Publication of any
details about a patient or patient's case is grounds for
suspension of your NALNC membership. Likewise,
publication of false statements about another person or
business is considered conduct unbecoming of a LNC and
grounds for suspension of your NALNC Membership.
Other LNC organizations are
being asked to create their own guidelines for their
members. The recent lawsuit by a LNC filed in federal
court against two other LNCs and the court orders which
followed remind us of the serious nature of publishing false
information about another person or business.
Following that lawsuit, NALNC received a number of
complaints from members of the public and the legal-medical
profession regarding messages posted to the internet by LNCs.
NALNC's newsletter discusses this topic is more detail.
LNCs are urged to read the article on LNC publications and
share that information with other LNCs.

WARNING
Are your private messages on listservs and message boards
jeopardizing your career?
One of the questions attorneys now ask an LNC is: "Are you an Expert Witness or an Advocate
(i.e., "Hired Gun")?
To find out, attorneys are turning to
internet discussion groups and blogs to find your text. The
following scenario sums this up:
YAHOO! Great news! You've just been hired to testify as an expert
witness in a case.
YAHOO! Counsel for the other side has just discovered a
damaging statement you made on what you believed was a
"private" discussion group and
plans to use it to destroy your credibility.
YAHOO! You just lost the job! And, worse yet, you may never
be hired again! In fact, many states have laws that
are now being used to revoke an RN's license for something
she said on a listserv. Read more...
